BUTTERFLIES

How does the monarch butterfly accomplish its biennial migration without a GPS? How can a female black swallowtail find parsley or a rue plant with her feet to know where to lay her eggs? What triggers caterpillars to search for suitable spots to pupate–sometimes through the entire winter season–so they can emerge as butterflies and start another generation?

Richard Day has been fascinated with butterflies since his first science project in grade school. He's photographed them in Susan's butterfly gardens for 15 years. You'll find no chilled critters on florist flowers in the files at Daybreak Imagery–our butterflies are free-flying and photographed on plants they choose. Daybreak offers butterfly and caterpillar portraits, nectar plants for butterflies, host plants for caterpillars and complete lifecycle sequences.
