On September 11, 2001, Rich Guadagno–former manager of Baskett Slough and Ankeny National Wildlife refuges–died on United flight 93. Rich's work was an inspiration. As a refuge manager, he was responsible for starting prairie and savanna habitat restoration to conserve the threatened Kincaid's lupine and endangered Fender's blue butterfly. He also accomplished extensive wetland restoration. In 2007, Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett named the 1000th National Recreation Trail in memory of Rich Guadagno. At the dedication, Scarlett stated that although Rich might have found the fanfare embarrassing, he would have embraced the possibility of inspiring others to a greater stewardship of the land and biodiversity that he treasured.
